Having a Primary/Secondary Insurer is causing my bill to be higher than if primary didn’t exist

Hi All,

I am trying to understand if I'm being screwed over by my insurers or if this is common practice.

I have my Primary insurance which is at a cheap rate, but high deductible plan. Blue cross blue shield.

We added myself to my wife's plan to motivate me to actually go to the doctor for smaller issues due to her copay being small but everything else being completely covered.

The problem is my medical discount for everything is calculated off of my Primary. Then when my secondary kicks in, their discount would have brought the bill lower, but it doesn't take effect. They pay out as if their discount was applied.

I kept the primary because of the HSA being nice to have, but really am not feeling the benefits of the secondary that I thought I was buying. Seems really dumb that having 2 insurances, rather than only my secondary could lead to increased costs.

I've been having a heck of a time fighting this, but it sounds like they are calling the unapplied discount "co insurance" and telling me I owe that amount.

(Wife's plan is through Aetna)
