Getting MLR Rebate from Ambetter
Just posting about my experience here in case anyone thinks to look up the same thing.
The background:
In 2021 I purchased Ambetter health insurance through the marketplace for myself and my husband. By 2022 he had a new job that offered health insurance so we no longer needed coverage and I canceled the plan from renewing. I received a letter in the mail in September 2022 stating that because of the Affordable Care Act that designates a Medical Loss Ratio (80/20 rule), I was entitled to a rebate for ~$300 that they were going to put towards a future premium as a credit. Well, I obviously don’t use Ambetter anymore so there are no future premiums, and I figured I’d end up getting a check instead.
Today I finally called to find out the status of that and they tell me that since my account has been terminated, they don’t have access to it and even after discussing with a supervisor, my only option was to talk to the healthcare marketplace and request it through there. They “put me through” to the marketplace (which ended up being a random HVAC company so I had to actually hang up and find the right number to call) and the healthcare.gov representative I spoke to said “I don’t know why they do this, they know we don’t have access to your records or billing but that is money that they owe you so definitely call back.”
I called back and told them what the rep from the healthcare marketplace said, with my understanding that they are obligated to send a check and that me no longer having active coverage isn’t an excuse to write me off and say I’m not eligible to receive it. I also referenced the fact that I received a letter in the mail with the exact amount I was owed, my policy #, and stated that by law it was money I was entitled to. I was polite but firm, and this second Ambetter rep kept “looking into it” so that after about 30 minutes of putting me on hold, she was finally able to give me confirmation that I would be sent a check and to look for it within 7-10 business days. Basically I wanted to provide this info if anyone else runs into this. With how much money that’s collected by health insurance companies, it’s gross that they try to pull this as well.
