German immigrants needing help choosing the right family ACA plan

Hi there!

My wife (24) and I (25) are permanently moving from Germany to the US in November. We’re currently building our own business, meaning that we need to get an individual/family plan as we don’t have an employer-based option. We’re going to be registered in Sumter County, Florida, but are going to live in an RV and travel the US while working remotely and expect to earn between 40-50k US in our first year. We’ve been calculating with 42k, just for comparison sake.

Neither of us has ever lived in the US, so we’ve already invested a lot of time into researching how to get proper health insurance. Our current state is that we want to get ourselves into an ACA-eligible EPO/PPO plan and the best option seems to be Florida Blue. We’ve found multiple plans that resonate with us, but we have no idea what to pick (see table: https://imgur.com/a/n98aJ2R).

We’ve ruled out plans with many coinsurance options for now, as we have no idea of what doctors and hospitals actually charge and don’t want to hit the OOP in a blink of an eye. Economically, either the Bronze or Platinum plan seem to make the most sense. Given that both of us are young and healthy, Bronze might be the best. Coming from Germany, however, we’d feel pretty uninsured with a 0$ premium (with our calculated ACA support of $657), and would feel better with an intermediate plan like the silver one.

The Florida Blue sales support recommended the Bronze 2139 plan, which, in our opinion, makes the least sense…

We know this is a lot to ask for, but we’d be incredibly appreciative of any hints on what to consider, what questions to ask, or how to proceed in general.

Enjoy your day,
Tillmann
