Gap in coverage resulting in less coverage for adhd?

I was talking to a boyfriend at the time about how I needed to get new insurance before I got kicked off my dad’s at 26. He mentioned I should make sure I don’t have a gap in coverage or else insurance will look at conditions I have as pre existing conditions and not cover them. We didn’t talk much about it I just took his advice and got insurance from the marketplace quickly.

Well I have a big bill due next week (private student loan payment) and really can’t afford to pay for my insurance plan and would like to call and cancel it. I’m starting a new job soon that I will receive health benefits from (I’m starting mid September). Will me canceling my current insurance effect my future coverage because of the gap? I am mostly scared that I would have to get retested for adhd which was so difficult the first time. Or not have coverage for medicine which is expensive.

I tried looking it up but honestly health insurance confuses me to no end.
