Freelance Drought + Health Insurance

US Based: I’ve been going through a freelance drought since the start of the year where projects just have been slow to come and what comes isn’t the right fit or falls through somehow.

Before this, I anticipated I’d be making about the same as I made last year which was about $60K so had been paying a premium health insurance rate at $600+ on the health insurance marketplace. As the months went by I’ve been using my savings to survive. Now that it’s nearly June and we’re halfway through the year and still not much coming in, I’ve admitted to myself that this isn’t sustainable and reported that I don’t have much income. I now qualify for Medicaid.

What’s your experience with health insurance when you’re going through a freelance drought? Have you just kept paying your premiums and continued as is until work picked up or do you adjust your plans throughout the year. I’m not married or under 26 so I don’t have a spouse or parent to fall back on. Am interested in your perspectives and experiences.
