Forgot to cancel COBRA after starting a new job

Previous employer said in my severance docs that I’ll be covered fully with cobra through end of November unless I start a new job with new insurance.

Start a new job mid June and accepted their health insurance. I assumed that cobra would immediately end at of that month since I started new insurance. Well…I assumed wrong and that’s completely on me.

I just reached out to an admin through my previous plan to cancel cobra for the month of August and they can do it. Takes five days to process.

But I’m worried that I’ll have to pay back the cost of cobra for July. I didn’t go to any doctors appointments, pick up any medication, etc the entire month of July (surprisingly).

Should I expect to hear back from my employer that I need to pay them back for the month of July’s coverage from cobra?

I’m just disappointed in myself for assuming it would automatically get cancelled. Only positive I can see from this is that at least it’s only one month and not more than that. So I’ll take the L if I have to.
