Feeling scammed- health insurance billing question

I’d be so very appreciative of any guidance. In October 2022 I received Botox for my migraines and it took till right before my next round in January 2023 to finally receive my EOB with me owing $158 for the bill. I was thrilled because the procedure is so costly. Well my January second round of Botox was $1500. Called my insurance and they said it turns out I was billed incorrectly for the first round as it should have been $1500 as well and that the hospital should have done a pre-authorization, but since they didn’t they can come back and back bill me for the rest if the hospital don’t decide to absorb the cost.

My problem is this- if I knew the first round was $1500, I would have NEVER went in for the second. I was never informed there was ever an issue at any point and assumed my second round would be the same $158. I figured since I received the EOB- that was the bottom line. Even if the hospital absorbs the first cost- I’ll still be out $1500 on top of the first $158. I feel scammed and in the dark. My insurance told me I could write a letter and dispute it, I don’t have high hopes nor do I feel with dealing with THEIR mistake and I’m the one being penalized. Also, my health insurance renews on October 1, not January so that would have nothing to do with it with any changes.

Is this legal to do? Do I have any ground to stand on?
