Family Insurance Plan – should I use Healthcare.gov?

Hello,

I have a family of 3: Myself, Wife, and 6-month-old son. I need to change insurance as my wife is going part time and we are losing her pretty good insurance. The family insurance plan at my work is $489 a pay period + Dental and Vision on top of that. I get paid biweekly so that is $12,714 a year+. This is for a high deductible plan – $9,100 ind/18,900 family.

What I am considering doing is signing up for individual health insurance through my work. This would charge me $63 per pay period, or $1638 a year + family dental and family vision through my work. Then signing my wife and son up for insurance through Healthcare.gov bronze plan costing roughly 665 a month or $7,98.00 a year. Doing it this way saves about $3,000 a year, and the insurance that my wife and son have is a little bit better.

I was wondering if this is a smart strategy, or if there is anything that I am missing thinking of doing this? Are there any other options for us that could help us save money on our insurance costs?

Additional information: This is in Kansas. I am 34M, wife 31F. Son 6 months. Our family income will be about 90k.

Thank you,
