Employer spiking health insurance premiums? (Union)

Greetings all.

So I have a union warehouse job, and my health insurance was about $20 a check (weekly). Our union contract states that our insurance is to go up $1 every year for the duration of the contract (2021-25). This year it more than doubled, up to about $44. There is a caveat in the contract that says the employer is only responsible for covering 8% increases, and they can pass the rest down to us. Our union business agent gave me a copy of the actuarial report for the increase, where a third party determined that our company would need to contribute 14.7% more, 6.7% apparently coming out of the employees’ pockets, which apparently is about $20 more per employee. I call BS.

More notes: 1. I’ve been at this company for about 18 months and there have been several payroll issues. Recently they randomly dropped paid out thousands of dollars to a few different employees because said employees did not receive raises when they hit their hour thresholds. (We have 4 wage progressions; you get a raise every 1280 hours worked) The notice for the increase in insurance came shortly after.

The increase was announced about a month after open enrollment, so we didn’t have the opportunity to opt out.

The actuarial report says that the numbers provided by our health insurer in the report are unaudited.

I’m taking this opportunity to learn about actuarial science and insurance. So any references to any relevant information would be appreciated. Thank you
