Employer never added my dependent, even though I was paying for them.

I joined my employers insurance in June of 2023. They took $120 out of each paycheck for coverage for myself and my daughter under the family plan. Individual plans are $60 per paycheck.

In April, they switched insurance companies but assured us all our information would be given to the new company and there would be nothing additional needed from us.

I took my daughter to the doctor Friday, and told me my insurance was rejected. I called the insurance company and sure enough, they said I have no dependents on my insurance despite paying for it.

I called my employer and they didn’t get back to me until today. They then informed me they saw my daughter’s name on the application, but she hasn’t had insurance for the past year. They never submitted her. It wasn’t even just since the switch. They NEVER added her. I’m absolutely livid. She’s been in speech therapy since February, and I figured insurance just wasn’t covering it because of the high deductible, being $13,800. But no. It’s because she doesn’t even have insurance.

My employer said they want to write me a check to reimburse me for what I’ve paid for her coverage; about $1800 and added her to the insurance as of today (Which I’m going to make them prove tomorrow when I talk to them again).

Her speech therapy bill is $1,640. The billing department at her speech therapy office said since our deductible is so high, the insurance likely wouldn’t cover any of it anyway.

Would it be smart to accept the payment and use it toward her speech therapy? Or should I fight them and have them backdate her coverage, even though there’s a chance none of it would be covered anyway?
