Emergency coverage only? And other questions
Hi! Here’s our demographic: Husband receives Kaiser paid for by employer. I’m a SAHM to our toddler and newborn. It’s currently around $500 a month for my toddler and myself and close to $700 if we add our newborn. $2500 deductible per person
Our primary residence is in MD, where his small company is located. He’s the only person in the company with a family, other than the boss. My husband is also the only employee on long term project in Virginia (3 years), over an hour away from the closest Kaiser location. We are “living” in VA while the project is happening, but returning to MD enough to keep our primary residence in MD
Not only is Kaiser a big hassle to get to when I have a sick toddler and a million newborn checkups, I have been very unhappy with our care so I am looking to switch.
1) Having a baby counts as a qualifying life event right? So would I be able to move myself and my toddler to a new insurance company, or just the newborn counts?
2) There is a great membership based primary care family practice nearby that I would love to use. They don’t accept insurance. I don’t mind paying out of pocket for them but wouldn’t want to also be paying for Kaiser just to cover emergency expenses. Is there such an insurance that we could get that would cover emergencies like accidents, serious illness, cancer?
3) Is almost $700 a month normal for three people? I know health insurance is insane but wow? We have $2500 deductible per person
4) Could my kids and myself qualify for MD Medicaid and have my husband stay on his companies plan? We are under the 400% for a family of 4 and if he stays on his companies we would be under the 400% for a family of 3 (not sure if that’s how that works?
5) Do I only have until my newborn is 30 days to figure this out since we are out of open enrollment?
6) Any recommendations on companies that l support superbills would be great. A lot of my recent care did not accept insurance but would give you a super bill and I have been very happy with my care.
