Drifting In and Out of Medicaid and ACA

Hi,

I only found out that I am now eligible for Medicaid so is switching over and canceling my ACA plans (family) even though we have the APTC taking care of the cost of premiums; I have also paid the max out of pockets for this year on the ACA plan. I read that we are not allowed to take the APTC while being approved for Medicaid, so hence the decision to cancel.

I’m an IT contractor, haven’t found any work for about a year. Assuming I get a months’ work in February 2023 and get paid like $5K or whatever amount that puts me out of the income range. Do I have to report that income when I get paid in February and lose the Medicaid immediately? Then go apply for a plan on the exchange immediately to start in March?

What happens if I don’t have any more work in March 2023? Do I have to reapply to Medicaid in March?

This could potentially happen a few times in a year, each time you drift back to ACA, your deductibles etc reset to zero which is terrible. What are my options?

Thanks
Matt
