Does it even make sense to sign up for health insurance?

My husband and I will be getting kicked off of Medicaid with the PHE ending. Our kids will continue to be eligible for Medicaid for the for-seeable future. My husbands employer offers health insurance with a premium adding up to around $6k a year for just my husband and I. Deductible and Out of Pocket are $3500/$4000 per person and $7000/$8000 family and 20% coinsurance after deductible is met.

The hospital/clinics/urgent care center that we use have financial assistance that forgives 100% of bills for uninsured people under a certain income, if you have an illness or injury that you need to be seen for. Preventative and routine exams can be paid out of pocket with a 45% discount for uninsured patients. We are both healthy 27 year olds who when still covered under our parents insurance, barely used it. I just can’t justify paying $6k a year in premiums alone, especially given the hospitals financial assistance in the case of an emergency. Given all of this information (and the fact that our kids are fully covered with Medicaid) is it dumb of me to consider going without insurance and paying as needed for routine exams and utilizing the financial assistance if needed? TIA

I will add that the month after losing coverage through his parents, my husband broke his ankle in a bike accident. The original hospital bill ended up being almost 100% forgiven (minus a $450 anesthesia bill) and he was able to qualify for Medicaid to pay for the subsequent surgery (because we had no income with him off of work due to the injury). In this situation it ended up financially better for us to be uninsured, making me question signing up now. submitted by /u/Junior-Comparison989
