Doctor charged me knowing that they couldn’t help me
I visited my primary care provider last month and a concern that I had was about a mass behind my left eye. It pops out when I put pressure on my eyeball and then goes back behind my brow bone. I think it is a cyst but it is worth getting checked out. I also have two small cysts that have been on my lower right waterline that have been there for years.
The doctor gave me a referral so I get a call from the eye doctor about an hour later to schedule my “eye exam”. I told them that I do NOT need a vision exam of any kind and explained what I said earlier. I tell them I need to see a doctor in their practice that can help with this.
The day of the appointment arrives and the tech takes me back into a room and is ready to do my eye exam. I’m like ??? and I told her I am NOT THERE FOR A VISION EXAM and she was confused! She literally did not know why I was there. When I explained my issues, she tells me that the doctor I’m about to see is a retinal specialist. I tell her that I can see someone else if she can’t help me, and she tells me that she should be able to diagnose me and help. I hear her whisper to the doctor about it outside of the door. Then the doctor comes in and I say everything again. She says it isn’t her specialty, takes a look, tells me what she thinks it may be and gives me a referral to a different doctor in their practice. She also told me it looks like I have some kind of rash from dry eye under my eyelids. I don’t have dry eye or any irritation and that isn’t what I went there for so I am aggravated because she charged me an expensive office visit. She also said that the tiny cysts on my waterline are probably clogged ducts and that the next doctor could probably remove them. When I look at the visit notes, it says that she recommended warm compresses for 10 minutes a day along with different creams. She did NOT say anything like that at all!
I asked every single person that I came into contact with if I’d be able to get help from this doctor just to be charged for an office visit that did nothing. Now I’m seeing the correct doctor that referred me to tomorrow but I am upset that I wasn’t scheduled an appointment with him in the first place. He is the ocular surgeon that deals with masses and other thing. I feel like I should not have to pay for this first visit because I was knowingly referred to the wrong doctor. I have contacted their billing department twice (appointment was on Thursday so I called right after and on Friday) and both people agreed that I have the right to be upset and I should have been scheduled with the surgeon first, especially since it was a referral from my PCO. They made their manager aware. The doctor I saw has not answered any of their messages yet and a claim has already been sent to my insurance. I have the appointment with the new doctor tomorrow morning. What do I do???
