Hi reddit! So, I’m double insured and a little ignorant on how insurance works.

The first insurance is Kaiser, which is owned by my mom and I’m on it for another year or so. The second insurance is Primera blue cross from my employer.

On Primera, I’ve noticed that there is a $1500 deductible and a $5000 max out-of-pocket which claims that I paid $10 on (so $4,990). I probably should have asked questions like this before perusing health care (I’m seeing a gastroenterologist for some concerning symptoms which may indicate colon polyps or cancer) and I’m seeing a dentist to deal with cavities.

Online tells me that a deductible is an amount I must pay off before my insurance starts to pay for me. I thought that being double insured would basically “insure” that I would have to pay next to nothing on medical bills, which I haven’t gotten any in the mail. Now I’m wondering if I owe $1500 and $4,990, which is WAY the fuck beyond my ability to pay off. My Kiaser does not indicate anything on the app like that, probably because my mom is the main insurance head.

Basically, have I dug myself into a hole?
