Discrepancy Between Dentist Bill and EOB (Cigna)
I recently received my dentist bill, which shows the each charge incurred between 2020 and 2022. However, the few Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) I have indicate that the billed amount (I can trace) was negotiated to a lower price and paid by my insurance company, Cigna. Unfortunately, the bill I received does not reflect this adjustment. For example, a $220 charge, reduced to $50 and paid by insurance, still shows as $220 outstanding on my bill.
I want to request all my EOBs covering that time period. However, Cigna informed me that they only retain EOBs for up to two years online.
Does Cigna (& other insurance companies) delete claims and EOBs from their systems after a certain period? Are there laws mandating insurance companies like Cigna to retain claims and Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) for a specific number of years? If so, can I quote these laws when requesting older EOBs? Can I request the dental office to provide all EOBs for my account? Are there legal requirements for the dental office to do so in New York City? submitted by /u/AccomplishedZilch
