Dependents kicked off health insurance after updating income

So I have a crazy problem (and I would warn others about this), and am looking for advice.

I retired a month ago, and I have a health insurance policy (BBS) for a family of four purchased off the exchange. When my wife updated my income (which went down because I am pulling from my retirement accounts, brokerage, etc. vs. work income), my 18-year old son was kicked off the policy.

We called healthcare.gov to figure out what was going on, and they told us a "Medicaid determination" needs to be done before he can be re-added to the policy, or he gets Medicaid.

that will take 6+ months.

Now I have a kid with no health insurance at all, who cannot even attend college because the school wants proof of insurance.

In other words, there is no grace period for this Medicaid determination–they just throw you off the policy while they wait to hear back.

what is the best course of action here?
