Denied short term disability for maternity leave bc of antidepressant prescription but I was approved for my first pregnancy

I work for a large company that does not offer any paid parental leave. When I had my first child 4 years ago, I covered my 12 week absence using accumulated sick and vacation leave. I also applied and was approved for Short Term Disability (STD) which paid 60% of my salary for 4 weeks, and would have extended to 6 weeks if I’d had a C-section.

I got pregnant again in November 2024, so I immediately applied for STD right before the deadline and submitted Evidence of Insurability (EOI). My employer uses Lincoln Financial for benefits. I just recieved a letter from Lincoln that states:

“We are unable to provide coverage due to your medical history of the condition or diagnosis treated with the prescription medication escitalopram.”

I am baffled because I was also taking escitalopram (Lexapro – a very common antidepressant) when I was granted STD for my first pregnancy.

The letter continues – “Our decision was based in whole or in part on a report we received from Milliman IntelliScript regarding medical information about you. During the enrollment process, you authorized the release of your records to help us determine your eligibility for insurance. Please note that Milliman IntelliScript did NOT make this decision and they are NOT able to explain why the decision was made.”

I would appreciate any guidance the kindhearted Reddit community can provide regarding my rights to appeal this decision.
