Coverage question, NY city and state

At the time I was covered by Oxford/UHC and saw a dermatologist in my network for a rareish dermatological issue.

At my first appointment and at every follow up with an actual doctor I paid my $60 specialist copay before seeing anyone as normal.

They recommended UV treatment for my issue and I contacted both my doctors office and my insurance company to check that this was covered. When I got this treatment their receptionist who afaik is not medically trained at all walked me into a room programmed a machine and left. I absorbed, flipped, hit a button to resume treatment, and then left after all of that.

The doctors office told me these did not count as visits under my plan and so I did not owe my copay either at the time of service or later on. They specifically said I wouldn’t be billed for these treatments in the future.

These treatments happened three times a week for six months. They would have continued but the office called me one day and said there was a billing error. I said everything looked good on my end and they confirmed my appointment for that day was still on. The receptionist was replaced, and while I did receive treatment on that day after checking in like normal, when leaving the receptionist demanded payment of a few hundred dollars for that days treatment and said I owed them thousands. I walked out and never returned.

They sent me a few bills saying I owe them a bunch of money and I threw them out because I’m stupid.

All of my EOBs from my insurance say I owe them zero but I don’t remember if insurance paid them anything or they just denied all those claims. This all happened pre-covid and life has gotten difficult since then and after a while of “fuck them their problem” I forgot about it.

They haven’t tried to collect, I no longer live in the area. So I don’t think I’m at risk here, but is this even valid for them to pursue?
