Coordination of benefits nightmare. Please help shed light
Hi there. I am 25 and thought my parents took me off their insurance (United) when I got married to my husband. They told me I was removed, so I assumed there was no issue and proceeded to make use of my husband's plan (Carefirst BCBS)
Under said plain I processed several claims, including a 60K surgery, a few physical therapy appointments, and 8 weeks of therapy. One day I see that my claims for physical therapy are being denied, and learned that I was still insured under United. Both companies said they were not the primary, and I broke no-contact with my mother in hopes of getting me officially removed. We cleared up that united WAS my primary (which is strange, because I thought that employer spousal benefits were always the primary. I was a dependent under my parent's insurance.)
As of july 1st, 2023 Carefirst BCBS is my only insurance (thank god), and they are retracting their coverage of any and all claims I had before July 1st. I am in the process of having everything BCBS denied re-sent to United, but I am assuming they will find a way to deny most or some of the claims, because insurances are slimy and find ways to get out of paying. I have heard secondary insurance is unlikely to re-cover the claims they got their money back on, so I am preparing for the worst.
I have started recording any and all calls with care providers and both insurance companies (I am in a 1 party consent state), and am ready to lawyer up or file a complaint to the state insurance commission if I get saddled with these bills. I am also in contact with my husband's HR and the company's insurance broker. I feel like I am preparing for a battle that might never happen.
I am looking for anyone who has experienced this before or has knowledge of how these things work. I have done hours of reading at this point but still feel in the dark. How did a situation like this go for you? This is extremely daunting, I was never taught how any of this works.
Thank you in advance for your help.
