Consequences of a gap in coverage?

Hey there, I am in the process of moving state to state. I am waiting to get info but I am not sure if I will be able to afford Cobra when I leave my job and also the plan I currently have does not have any network doctors that I will be able to access once I leave here 2 weeks after I go on Cobra. If it is either too expensive or if there is no doctor network, I am considering getting a cheap short term insurance which would have a high deductible but would cover me in the event of an unforeseen expensive emergency. I will need some time to get my shit together before I can start working, but I hope to have a job with insurance between 3-6 months.

I know that new legit insurance will have to cover pre-existing conditions, but I just want to make sure that there isn't some other thing to consider if I let my "regular" insurance lapse for a few months. Taxes, limits on coverage, etc. Does anyone know? Thank you all very much for being so helpful.
