COBRA Insurance – Maternity Leave – Does My Newborn Qualify?

So I have a question with regard to COBRA health insurance as it relates to maternity leave.

I just found out that employer isn’t responsible to cover my health insurance during the time I’m on maternity leave, therefore I’m going to sign up for COBRA so I can continue on my health insurance while I’m on leave and when I return to work, and keep all that money spent towards my deductible in the hospital, in tact.

My question is as follows:
I added my newborn to my insurance plan before I knew this was the case (that I’d be having to continue my insurance with COBRA). Cobra says it only considers qualified beneficiary children as “dependent children covered under the plan on the day before the event that caused the loss of coverage”. Does this mean my newborn doesn’t qualify for COBRA because he didn’t exist on the day before the “date of the qualifying event” (his birth). Does anyone have experience with or knowledge in this? I’m gonna have to end up calling COBRA, but was curious if anyone else had to deal with this.
