Hi! I’m newly pregnant and just found out my company will be sold to a new company sometime this year, probably in the second or third quarter. I’m due in October. I’m kind of freaking out about the possibility of having to sign up for all new health insurance and start my deductible all over again right before I give birth, and then go on unpaid maternity leave. From what I can find anecdotally about these situations, it looks like sometimes the new company will honor the old insurance til the end of the year, and sometimes they make you start over on their insurance, and you usually don’t know what will happen til the buyout is actually complete.

My question is…if the new company makes us start over on their insurance, can I COBRA my old insurance? The company that is selling us will still exist, so I’m assuming their insurance plan will also still exist. This seems like a logical option to me, since I’d be able to COBRA if I quit and started a brand new job and needed insurance to cover the gap. Anyone ever done this or heard of it being done? It’s hard to know exactly what to google to find good answers.
