Can authorization be obtained retroactively (non-emergency)

So, I had prior auth coverage denied for a procedure deemed investigational. I went through an appeal and my doc did a peer-to-peer review, and it was still denied.

I finally had the procedure done, a vascular imaging test, but ended up not having the treatment (that coverage was denied for) done because the issue suspected was ultimately not the problem. Instead, the doc found another issue, took imaging and measurements, and this imaging test/procedure has been covered by my insurance in previous instances.

However, because my insurance wouldn't provide prior auth for the treatment I thought I'd be having, I ended up paying out-of-pocket thousands right before having the procedure done.

I'm wondering if I can get authorization retroactively since I didn't get the denied treatment done after all, but I had this procedure that has also provided another diagnosis.
