(CALIFORNIA) Full-time Unemployed Caretaker for Mom, Being Dropped from Medi-Cal due to Household Income???

I received a letter this morning saying that because my household income is above the limit, I am being dropped from Medi-Cal. My household consists of my mom and myself. My mom is 70, has late-stage Alzheimer’s, and I am her full-time caregiver living with her, in her house that she owns. Her income consists of Social Security and a pension from my late father’s union.

At the urging of social workers, I attempted to apply for Medi-Cal for my mom through the Covered California website. She was denied due to her income being too high as well as having Medicare. Because I entered information about myself into the website because it asked about others in the household, that put me on the system’s radar apparently?

I don’t understand how money for my mom’s care that she paid into the system would disallow me from receiving continuing care. I do weekly telehealth appointments with a therapist and have a prescription for anti-depressants, as well as a cream for a skin condition.

The coverage options I was given on the Covered California website all have co-pays and deductibles. I have ZERO income because my mom requires all of my time and attention. I use a little of her Social Security for food to LIVE and nothing else.

Why am I being penalised for taking care of my sick mom??? I don’t understand.

Please, can someone help me understand why the system works this way or what to do?
