[CA] Company insurance change during labor/birth? Help please.

Hello,

We have ran into an odd insurance transition period and are hoping anyone has some information/experience with something similar.

My partner is currently pregnant and due in August. Her employer offers Kaiser. Her employer (massive company) filed for bankruptcy, but another company has offered to buy them. This is pending their bankruptcy deal/court finalizing things. The new company cannot formally “close” on the deal until finalized court items are completed and a judge allows it. Currently, the unofficial date this will occur is on July 22, the same exact date my partner goes on leave!

The new company cannot provide new contracts for the existing employees until all the aforementioned is completed. They did however, provide an overview of their benefits/insurance which do not include Kaiser. They have Cigna, Aetna, blue cross/blue shield, and united healthcare.

My question is, what happens if she goes into labor shortly after she signs the contract with the new company? Does she have to go and find a new OB and place to deliver, or can she complete labor at the existing hospital? Our worry is that there is not enough time to transition care, find a doctor, delivery center, etc. during the last two weeks of her pregnancy.

Any input or guidance would be appreciated. It’s so difficult and worrying that we are in a weird limbo period. We want to make sure we’re covered during labor.

Thank you for any help.
