Hey, I’m a young adult living in the UK and don’t know much about health insurance.

I have a spinal deformity, and would like to receive the surgery to correct it. Unfortunately, the surgery isn’t highly recommended and the NHS seem especially reluctant to offer it to people unless you are the perfect candidate.

For this reason (and others) I am considering going to private surgeons. However, the surgery is very expensive.

You either have the option to self-pay (which seems very hard) or to do it via health insurance (which I’m guessing is slightly more affordable/easier????)

I don’t have health insurance, or at least not yet. But if I were to get it, would it be perfectly legal/possible/fine to get it knowing fully that I wish for them to help pay for the particular type of surgery I one day plan on having. Would it also be normal to discuss this with them when deciding to purchase insurance?

Thank you so much in advance!
