Biologic copay accumulator assistance

Biologic copay accumulator assistance

My son was recently diagnosed with severe Crohn's and his doctors are demanding that we switch to a biologic medication after failing other medications. We have (terrible) commercial insurance through my employer. It has a $9100 individual deductible and we legitimately cannot afford the biologic medications out of pocket; up until now he has just been on cheap generic drugs like prednisone.

Our insurance will cover either Avsola or Humira, however both are extremely expensive. While both drug companies have copay assistance programs, our health insurance has a copay accumulator so the funds from any copay assistance program don't count to our deductible. Within a few months it will exhaust the funds and would have to pay out of pocket, which we cannot afford.

Other than moving to a state that bans them, is there any way to get an exception for copay accumulators? Or do you know of any other assistance programs?

We qualify for CHIP in our state, so could we get better insurance coverage through CHIP? I'm just concerned that CHIP/Medicaid would not cover biologics at all.
