Being asked to pay for health insurance benefits I haven’t used

Hello everyone,

I was employed with a state agency in the US for a period of several months. I did not elect to sign up for health benefits during onboarding in March, but I did enroll for them on the deadline in May.

I enrolled in late May, which means that coverage would begin starting June 1st.

I actually left the agency this month for a new position. My last day was this during this month.

I received a bill in the mail asking me to pay premiums for April, May & June. I tried to call the Benefits representative at my former agency and they didn’t seem to be able to do anything.

I can understand them wanting me to pay the premium for June because I enrolled in late May, but seeing as I didn’t enroll in March (when I started), I technically wasn’t covered for April & May.

I just sent them an email explaining this, but I doubt it’s gonna go anywhere.

Does anyone know if I have a legitimate case here against paying for April and May? I really hope they won’t make me pay for those first two months but it looks like they’re going to.
