Am I SOL on mammograms for life?

Last year I had a preventative mammogram fully covered under my plan. The hospital did a 2D type. Then they said they wanted a more detailed 3D scan because they thought they “saw something”. Turns out my insurance would have covered a 3D to begin with if they would have started with that one.

The hospital told me that since they saw something that any mammogram I have from here on out will be coded as diagnostic. My insurance company says they won’t cover a diagnostic mammogram. The hospital said my bill would be $1800. When I look up the average cost of a diagnostic mammogram without insurance it’s $300-$500 so I don’t know why they keep quoting me $1800. I feel like the hospital totally screwed me and even though I’m supposed to have one a year (you know so I don’t die) I can’t. So much for preventative care.

So, because I have this scarlet letter of diagnostic on my medical chart does it mean I can never get a mammogram covered again?
