Am I paying my copay or deductible for my first dr visit?

So I just got new health insurance this month. Me and my boyfriend are arguing about the deductible.

In my experience, when I go to a normal doctors visit I pay the copay. So lets say I get the flu, go to my doctor, I pay the copay, they dont do any treatment or maybe prescribe something, I go on my way.

Hes saying the copay doesnt kick in until after I pay my 500$ deductible so that doctors visit could actually cost me a few hundred right there.

Ive switched insurances plenty but never had this issue? Never gotten any collection letters. I dont go to the doctors as often as I should tho.. but Ive always gone in and only paid my copay??

Also, birth control is completely free legally.. I dont have to pay for that until my deductible is reached do I?

I was under the impression that deductibles are for like big things (like an xray, labwork, etc) not visits and rxs.

Sorry, this has probably been asked a million times. Hes just “100% positive” and I am super stubborn and also pretty positive that this has been my experience for the past like 8 years Ive had my own insurance.
