Advice – NC Healthcare Marketplace for past high income earner

Hi,

Posting for help as I am not sure where to start.

I recently left my tech job in CA and plan to be unemployed for some time. I am planning to travel/be a nomad internationally for a year or two.

In the interim, I am moving my things to my family home in Raleigh, NC which will be my new residence (though I will be there only from time to time). I am trying to figure out what to do for health insurance.

I’m a single 37yo male. I am healthy and have no healthcare needs other than emergencies or some new illness. My income has been high ($1m+), have significant assets, but will have almost no income going forward.

I don’t think I am eligible for NC Medicaid. I will have $20k+ interest and dividend income even though I will have no earned income.

I don’t think I need international travel insurance. Just like any other vacation, I can cover local costs (in normal healthcare countries) as they come up and can always return to NC if something life altering occurs.

That leaves the NC healthcare marketplace. I don’t think I should be eligible for any subsidies given my historic income and even some go forward passive income. I am considering signing up for one of the cheapest plans (~$350/mo) to cover catastrophic issues and just fully paying for the premiums myself.

Am I missing anything? Any holes in my thought process above or other suggestions?

Appreciate any help – I have tried to piece together as much as I can from other posts to get here. Realize this is coming from a privileged background and I have never thought about health insurance before…
