Advice: Insurance no longer covering brain rehab after <2 weeks — will cost $100k+ out of pocket

Hi all this is post is coming from someone in the US (Midwest); I’m posting in a couple subs because I’m not sure which one is the best.

My family needs medical insurance advice. My dad (55M) suffered a major brain and spine injury the first week of 2023 after falling 10-12 feet. He spent the first 1.5 months after his injury in the ICU, and since then went to a rehab facility (still a hospital) for a couple of months and is now at a different rehab facility (more nursing home like) that is in-network for intensive rehab. He got to this new rehab facility less than 2 weeks ago, and insurance approved for him to go there.

Insurance just told us that they will no longer cover his time at this new rehab facility — effective in a few days because he “doesn’t need it”. Insurance approved for him to go there, and less than two weeks after he got there, insurance is deciding not to cover it? Idk something seems off.

To me, this is complete BS and corporate greed: sure he has come a long ways, but there is no way he is ready to go home. While he has gained physical strength and healed his vertebrae, his brain still needs A LOT of focus. Based on conversations at the new rehab facility, they are encouraging for him to be there for about 2 more months. From what my mom has told me, it will be $100k+ for him to stay there.

We are on Medica (through United Health).

What can we do to fight for insurance to cover more of his stay at this facility? What options or advice do you have?

— TLDR: insurance company will no longer cover brain rehab facility after being there less than 2 weeks. It will cost $100k+ for him to be there, and he needs to be there. What can we do for insurance to cover rehab more rehab?
