ACA vs Medicaid
I updated my ACA info in March to reflect that I was working again after having a baby in 2020. It is a part time 1099 gig, but I can take my kid with and it works for our family. Not making much and my husband is self employed, so we’ve always used ACA coverage to make that dream possible. My Marketplace application kicked me back to DSS as my state has only recently expanded Medicaid. The website said to continue paying premiums pending the Medicaid decision. Medicaid sends me a letter saying that our income does not qualify for coverage, but we could get coverage if we pay a $17k deductible. That letter gave me panic attacks alllll weekend. Fun times. /s Three months later, I have emailed, called and left messages for the caseworker. I have told her that the income reported is an average, as our self employment income fluctuates. And I just started another job as a substitute teacher, so i literally will not qualify the past two months. But they approved the Medicaid anyway, some bs about ‘the system’ using 2023 tax year info for some of the decision. I have told her that 2024 income is not going to look anything like 2023. The system retroactive enrolls us to March. ACA says I’m SOL and have to pay for the coverage they told me to keep pending this decision. So now I’m $3000 down for the year and it’s like I never even started working again. Part of me wants to quit my job and ride Medicaid for revenge. But I’m a preschool teacher and I actually like it.
