A Brief Overview of Humana Health Insurance

A Brief Overview of Humana Health Insurance

An unfortunate reality in life and business is that no one company is perfect, including Humana Health Insurance.

In fact, nothing is, really. But that being said, some companies do excel at what they do or provide. And Humana is often considered one of those companies.

For example, a summary of a review from one expert source had this to say when looking at Humana

“Humana has a breadth of products and services to offer their members, including health, vision, and dental insurance plans. Furthermore, the company is a top choice if you are looking for many Medicare Advantage plan options. Although Humana does provide Medicare and Medicaid, it does not currently offer individual health insurance on Obamacare health insurance marketplaces. The company overall has slightly negative reviews but actively attempts to fix issues and is financially stable.”

So, while Humana is not all things health coverage-related for all people, it has much to offer.

Considering Humana

Humana has been in the health care business for almost 50 years and today serves over nine million members across the United States.

Humana offers a wide range of healthcare-related insurance products, including employer group health plans, as well as dental and vision plans. Humana’s health plans are available in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

Humana does not, however, offer health insurance plans in California, nor is Humana Health Care part of the Covered California plans

In fact, Humana insurance no longer offers individual health insurance policies, according to the company’s website. Beginning with the 2018 enrollment period, the company removed all their health insurance plans from the state and government exchanges.

However, in California, for example, Humana does provide Medicare Advantage Plans.

Where Humana Shows Strong: Medicare Advantage

Seniors on Medicare often take advantage of alternative, private plans, often known as Medicare Advantage plans.

This is a service and product area where Humana has made a strong showing among other providers.

As one source sums it up,

“Humana Medicare plans are available in all 50 states, and Humana’s Medicare Advantage is available in 84% of counties, more than any other insurer. Many Humana plans score well for quality and customer satisfaction, and the company offers a robust set of extra benefits and ways to interact with them, from online capabilities to a mobile app.”

Medicare Advantage is defined as,

“A type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans provide all of your Part A and Part B benefits, with a few exclusions, for example, certain aspects of clinical trials which are covered by Original Medicare even though you’re still in the plan. Medicare Advantage Plans include:

Health Maintenance Organizations
Preferred Provider Organizations
Private Fee-for-Service Plans
Special Needs Plans
Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans”

Medicare, or Original Medicare as it is often referred to, is the government-funded medical insurance coverage most of us are familiar with. It is the nation’s federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and those People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

As the government’s Medicare website describes it,

“Original Medicare is a fee-for-service health plan that has two parts: Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance). After you pay a deductible, Medicare pays its share of the Medicare-approved amount, and you pay your share (coinsurance and deductibles).”

It is important to keep in mind that if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, such as one through Humana:

Most Medicare services are covered through the plan
Most Medicare services aren’t paid for by Original Medicare
Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage.

Humana offers California residents a variety of Medicare Advantage health insurance plans. Some of the more popular plans that Humana health offers include their Monogram Total Plus Rx, Autograph Share Plus Rx, and Portrait Share Plus Rx.

And according to the Humana website, many Humana Medicare Advantage plans include coverage for dental exams, cleanings, and X-rays, and some even include coverage for fillings, extractions, dentures, and crowns.

For California residents not on Medicare or signing up for a Medicare Advantage plan, Humana dental insurance is offered with a suite of PPO dental plans that are relatively affordable and ranked well when compared to other national dental coverage providers.

Humana dental insurance coverage plans are categorized in order of lower monthly costs, as Complete Dental, Loyalty Plus, and Preventive Value.

And, according to the Humana website, they offer a variety of dental plan options to provide affordable coverage you need at budget-friendly rates, no waiting periods for most plans with most plans becoming effective in 5–7 days, and savings when using their network providers.
