$400K medical bill. I paid $0. Literally did not pay a single cent. Why do I owe nothing?

Medicaid Insured.

I was in the ICU in Jan for respiratory failure. They don’t know why I had respiratory failure, even still. Likely it was sequela from an extremely rare genetic disease.

I was actually applying for insurance 1-2 weeks prior to being in the ICU bc parents insurance didn’t cover me anymore. Never completed my application until I was actually almost discharged (the ICU doc urged me, even coming back out of breath because he ran to my room at 6pm the Friday prior to my discharge. He didn’t want me to leave til Monday so I’d assuredly have insurance).

Anyway, I completed my insurance before leaving and literally now owe $0. Is there some emergency clause or something that eliminated my deductible? I have been to multiple doctors since discharge, each requiring tests that racked them up to 10k a visit. Still, I owe $0.

I thought Obamacare was supposed to suck? Why was it fucking awesome in my case?

Also btw I’m fine now. Just wondering what could be the legal answer for me getting out of $400k of medical expenses. I thought I’d have to pay a deductible but that doesn’t seem to be the case
