25 y/o – “Screening” Colonoscopy?
Is there any scenario in which someone under age 45 can fall into the “screening” category for colonoscopy? I have seen mixed answers in previous threads.
For context: I’m a 25 y/o female and my first degree relative (brother) had precancerous polyps found and removed in his early twenties during a diagnostic colonoscopy that was ordered due to symptoms he was experiencing at the time.
I shared this information about my family history with my PCP, who then strongly encouraged me to get a colonoscopy and referred me to the GI.
I personally have zero GI symptoms whatsoever and would only be getting the colonoscopy due to family history.
Is there a way to get the procedure coded as screening AND high-risk family history? My insurance also stated I’d need prior authorization, which I have no idea how to go about getting.
I have a bad feeling this is going to get expensive, but I also don’t really want to wait 20 years to find out I ignored something that I should’ve acted on sooner in life.
