2 insurances; coordination of benefits

I'm looking at insurance plans with a new job and am wondering how coordination of benefits would work with our current plan from my spouse's employer.

Our current plan is the highest option allowed by the state insurance plan (BCBS). Deductible is $500 individual & $1k family. Out of pocket max is $3k indiv & $6k family.

I'm thinking about getting an Aetna plan which has a $2k/$4k deductible & $4/$8k max. It also comes with the HSA option with some employer contribution.

With the birthday rule, our kids would fall under the Aetna plan first.

I don't fully understand how much each insurance would pay and am concerned ill get burned by the higher deductible before the secondary insurance picks up. I could pay for a lower deductible plan, but the premiums are double & no HSA.

Is there a good rule of thumb to follow, or perhaps an online calculator which would help determine the best option?
