The Issue

Dorel Juvenile Group (manufacturer of Safety 1st and Maxi Cosi seats) has issued a recall with NHTSA on certain rear-facing only car seats due to lower anchor (LATCH) failure.

Immediately discontinue the use of lower anchors when installing the seats listed below with the base.

Owners may continue to use their car seat with the base or with shell only when secured using the vehicle belt restraint system, consistent with the existing instruction booklet and labels. A free replacement base will be sent to the owners once available.

Action Required

Immediately discontinue the use of lower anchors. Owners may continue to use their car seat with the base or with shell only when secured using the vehicle belt restraint system, consistent with the existing instruction booklet and labels. Note to onBoard SecureTech owners: the baseless recline angle indicator is embossed on the seat itself.  There is a label pointing to it but the actual indicator is that line, please refer to that line if you install your car seat without the base while waiting for this recall remedy.

Safety Risk:

A detached car seat may not properly restrain the child, increasing the risk of injury or death in a crash.

Issue:

Dorel Juvenile Group (Dorel) is recalling certain Safety 1st onBoard 35 Secure Tech, Maxi-Cosi Coral XP, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP Max, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP, Maxi-Cosi Mico Luxe+, and Maxi-Cosi Infant Base child seats. Please refer to Dorel’s recall report for specific model numbers. The lower seat anchors used to secure the child seat base may fail, allowing the child seat to detach. As such, these child seats fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 213, “Child Restraint Systems.”

Remedy

Owners are advised to only secure their child seat(s) with the vehicle belt restraint system until the seat is remedied. Dorel will mail a replacement base to owners, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 7, 2023. Owners may contact Dorel customer service at 1-877-657-9546 or [email protected]
