General Motors’ Safety Engineer Frank Dusina wants to be sure that drivers are alerted to bicyclists, not just because it’s his job — it’s also personal.

In the early 2000s, Dusina’s close friend was biking one night through Grand Rapids. The friend was near a highway off-ramp when a driver exiting the highway barreled into Dusina’s friend, killing him. He was just 21 years old.

“This happened, gosh 20 years ago now. But it’s so clearly super near and dear to my heart,” said Dusina, who is a cyclist himself riding about 1,000 to 1,500 miles a year. “I don’t want anyone to have to go through that. You see people on the roads who are, unfortunately, distracted. It’s just not safe yet. So anything we can do to aim at bringing awareness to drivers that’s gonna prevent things like the loss of a close friend or family member or your own life, we want to do it.”

GM is making bicyclist-alert technology standard equipment on most of its lineup across its brands, starting with the 2025 model year. It is standard equipment now on 10 vehicles including: the all-electric 2023 Cadillac Lyriq, 2024 Silverado EV, 2024 Blazer EV, Equinox EV and two of its top-selling models: 2024 Chevrolet Traverse and 2025 Equinox SUVs.
