Austin Tesla owners start getting Autopilot recall updates

“They are drilling down on exactly where and under what conditions the technology can be used. Only on controlled-access highways like interstates and some of the larger highways in America,” said Michael Brooks, Executive Director of the Center for Auto Safety.

Tesla is recalling nearly all vehicles sold in the U.S. to fix the Autopilot system. 2-million cars will get an over-the-air software update to ensure drivers are paying attention when using Autopilot. U.S. safety regulators say the update will increase warnings and alerts and even limit the areas where Autopilot can operate.

The Tesla recall comes after a two-year government probe of nearly a thousand crashes in which the Autopilot feature was reportedly engaged. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the autopilot system can give drivers a false sense of security and be misused in certain dangerous situations. The required software update will give Tesla drivers more warnings if they are not paying attention when the Autopilot function is turned on.
