Indian firm expands its winning 650cc range with new Super Meteor cruiser

If you’d told us even five years ago that Royal Enfield would be topping sales charts across the UK and Europe, we’d have been checking your morning coffee for mind-altering substances. But the Anglo-Indian firm has had a series of amazing hits since then, with the 650cc twins and 350 single range scooping up thousands of sales, thanks to decent chassis, willing engines, slick styling and great pricing.

And now the firm has launched a third bike in the 650 range – the Super Meteor 650. It takes the winning formula of the 650 Continental and GT models, with the 47bhp parallel twin engine, and mixes it up with the retro cruiser style of the Meteor 350.

The Harris Performance-developed chassis is a new bespoke design, optimised for cruising, and has a low-slung seat (just 740mm high), kicked-out front end and smart custom-style cast wheels and cruiser tyre sizes (100/90 19 front and 150/80 16 rear). Forward controls give a relaxed cruising riding position, and with the optional windscreen and bags from the touring versions, it should make a sweet retro distance cruiser.

The Super Meteor is also the first new Royal Enfield with upside-down front forks, perhaps surprisingly. The 43mm USD units have 120mm travel, and match to a pair of twin shocks out back, adjustable for preload only. Kerb weight is quite chunky at 241kg ready to ride – though that’s perhaps not so important on a cruiser like this.

Equipment levels are modest: you get ABS of course, LED lighting and the firm’s turn-by-turn navigation setup, as well as a USB charging socket. But there’s no fancy advanced rider aids – which is probably exactly how prospective owners will want it…

The Super Meteor 650 is the solo tourer variant and will be available in five colourways – Astral Black, Astral Blue, Astral Green, Interstellar Grey, and Interstellar Green. The Super Meteor 650 Tourer is the grand tourer variant and will be available in Celestial Red and Celestial Blue

The Super Meteor comes with an extensive range of Royal Enfield accessories that complement its touring capabilities ready to go. Of the three bikes unveiled at EICMA, the Astral Black Super Meteor 650 is equipped with solo tourer genuine accessories, including bar end mirrors, deluxe footpeg, solo finisher kit, LED indicators and machined wheels.

The Interstellar Green Super Meteor 650 is displayed in the standard format.

No word yet on price or availability, but expect the Super Meteor to be keenly priced, like the other 650 machines. More info: www.royalenfield.com
