bike balls

We all have a cyclist in our life, and if you’re reading this, there’s a chance that you’ll have more than one in yours!

Generally speaking, we are a pretty easy bunch to buy for – I don’t know a single cyclist without some sort of shopping list- but we’ve decided to put this guide together for you to make it even easier.

These items are perfect to fill the stocking of your favourite cyclist or as a gift if you drew a bike commuter in the office secret Santa!

Lights

Bike lights are a bit like socks, you can never have enough. Whether it’s a big bright front light, a flashing rear light or a jokey pair of “Bike Balls” – a bike light will never disappoint, especially at this time of year.

A great selection of (more sensible) bike lights can be found at Tredz. If you are an annual bicycle insurance customer with Yellow Jersey, you can save 10% on Tredz by logging into your customer account, and clicking Partner Discounts. And it’s not just Tredz. You will find dozens of discounts from different cycling brands and shops which we’ll highlight for you below.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses can be a stocking filler and aren’t always expensive, another small item that can be useful to have more of. Whether it’s a fresh pair of Oakley glasses or a cheap pair of clear Carnacs just to keep the gravel out – a new pair of glasses will be appreciated by the cyclist in your life.

Yellow Jersey’s annual bicycle insurance customers get a 20% discount from Oakley!

Locks

One for the cycle commuters! Bike locks are the last line of defence between your bike being there for you and not, so make sure you buy something that’s going to do the job.

Look for the “Sold Secure” logo, an indicator of quality, and don’t consider anything less than a Silver Rating. If you or your giftee has an insurance policy with Yellow Jersey, and their bike is worth £1500 or more, they will need to use a Sold Secure Gold rated lock to be covered by us, and we recommend them for everyone.

Tredz and Halfords both have plenty of options, and offer discounts to Yellow Jersey customers. If you are a Performance or Ultimate customer, you can also save 15% directly through Hiplok.

BIKE Lube

I mean, who doesn’t want lube for Christmas? Wet lube for the rainy days out this winter or dry lube to keep your turbo nice and smooth. Bike lube can increase the life of your group-set as well as keeping your chain squeak free.  Muc Off are the kings of bike maintenance brands, and if you have a Performance or Ultimate policy with Yellow Jersey, you’ll find a 20% discount for them when you log in to the Yellow Jersey customer area.

Chamois cream

Bring the gift of comfort to your cycling friends. Some cyclists swear by chamois cream and others don’t buy it. The aim is to provide a lubricating layer between your delicate parts and the saddle reducing pressure. Does it work? Buy your cycling friend some and ask them!  Yellow Jersey customers can get themselves a pot of Bum Butter for 25% off.

Cycling bookS

There are a number of cycling books available – everything from recipe books by cycling chef Alan Murchison to lists of the best climbs and memoirs of professional cyclists. The key to selecting the right book is knowing your cyclist – are they a future grand tour winner, a cafe expert or a boffin of cycling history? Diehard road cycling fans will be impressed by The Road Book, an incredibly detailed record of the road season year on year including the routes, course conditions and results. Yellow Jersey customers can also save 25% off the cover price which is a nice treat.

The Road Book - road cycling book

If The Road Book is a little too in-depth for your giftee, perhaps a magazine subscription would suit them better? You will find discounts on subscriptions in the Yellow Jersey customer area for a huge range of subscriptions including Cycling Weekly, Cyclist Magazine and Cycling Pluss for the roadies, MBR Magazine and MBUK for the mountain bikers, and 220 Triathlon, Outdoor Swimmer, and Runner’s World for the triathletes.

Multitools

A multitool might be the last line of defence between you having to collect your cyclist and them getting home on their own. Think of buying a multitool as an investment in yourself – if your cycling spouse, housemate or child has the means to fix mechanicals on their own you won’t have to go and collect them. It’s a win for all involved.

The Crank Brothers Multi 17 Multi Tool (Available via Tredz with a YJ discount) has everything your cyclist friend is going to need by the side of the road, including a chain breaker, which is both unusual and incredibly handy. Just make sure they know how to use it.
