The UK Government has unveiled plans to modernise the annual MOT process after concluding a comprehensive consultation. The first MOT test for a vehicle will continue to be required three years from registration, with subsequent tests conducted annually by a motor trade professional, like a qualified MOT technician.

One key point of discussion is whether the MOT will play a more significant role in ensuring compliance with emissions regulations for diesel vehicles. The Department for Transport (DfT) will also stay vigilant regarding technological advancements that could impact MOT procedures.

The consultation was initiated in January 2023 and aimed to gather opinions on maintaining the balance between motorists’ costs, road safety, advancements in vehicle technology, and addressing vehicle emissions. The government is mainly focused on exploring improved monitoring of diesel vehicle emissions through the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

The MOT, or Ministry of Transport, is an essential annual assessment to ensure vehicles meet the UK’s minimum road safety and environmental standards. Its cost is determined by the type of vehicle, with a maximum price set by the Motor Trades Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

While many cars pass the MOT on the first attempt, the 12-month certificate is a snapshot of the vehicle’s condition during the test, emphasising the importance of regular car maintenance checks.

Roads Minister Guy Opperman said: “We have listened to drivers and industry, and keeping MOTs in their current form shows once again that we are on the side of motorists.

“By offering clarity on MOT tests, alongside our recent street works consultation and unprecedented £8.3 billion to resurface roads, we are helping motorists drive with peace of mind and ensuring Britain’s roads continue to be some of the safest in the world.”

MOT tests encompass various vehicle components, such as brakes, lights, tyres, steering, suspension, exhaust emissions, and structural integrity. Passing the test results in a one-year MOT certificate and driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal and will invalidate your private or motor trade insurance policy.

The gov.uk website outlines 21 categories of vehicles requiring an annual MOT, with prices ranging from £29.65 to £124.50, with higher fees applicable to buses and large commercial vehicles.

Vehicle services are very different and are carried out by a local garage mechanic. These entail inspections, adjustments, and replacements performed regularly or as the manufacturer recommends. The goal is to ensure proper functioning, reliability, and longevity. A typical car service includes oil and filter changes, fluid checks, brake and tyre inspections, battery and electronics tests, and general wear and tear assessments.

Car services help maintain a vehicle’s performance and identify potential issues before they escalate, saving money on future repairs.

Combining your MOT and service is possible. MOT and Service Plans enable spreading the cost over an extended period, providing convenience for car owners.

Whether done together or separately, the crucial aspect is ensuring that both safety inspections and recommended maintenance procedures are completed for the vehicle’s optimal performance.

The Department for Transport (DfT) will also continue to monitor technological advancements that could impact MOTs.

Following the conclusion of the consultation, Neil Barlow, Head of Vehicle Policy at DVSA, said: “Ensuring the MOT remains fit for the future is a vital part of DVSA’s work and getting ready for new technology will help keep Britain’s roads safe.”
