Fuelling Around podcast: Touring Patrick Kielty talks about life on the road

Patrick Kielty

Patrick Kielty has the boys in hysterics as the penultimate episode of Fuelling Around hits the airwaves.

The stand-up comedian and TV and radio presenter is a lover of cars and camper van holidays as he explains to co-hosts Dave Vitty and Jason Plato.

And of course he does so by regaling some hilarious tales from yesteryear in what is one of the funniest episodes of the hit automotive podcast so far.

Patrick Kielty on ‘dad-napping’ the way through his Borderline tour

The Northern Irish celebrity, married to TV presenter Cat Deeley, is currently on his first stand-up tour for seven years.

After doing two months worth of shows on both sides of the border in Ireland, his amusing post-Brexit political musings are now doing the rounds in Britain.

But what is the dad-of-two most enjoying about his time on the road? Getting some much-needed sleep by the sounds of it!

“When you have small human beings in your life who are the ages of four and six, essentially getting away on quote, unquote, ‘tour’ is just a series of mini break weekends for a middle-aged dad,” laughed the former Fame Academy host.

“Whenever you’re looking after the kids, whenever you’re in lockdown, whenever you’re trying to do the things that men of a certain age want to do, there’s always a bedroom in the house where you pretend you’re going to do emails and that’s essentially the dad nap room.

“‘I’m very busy, ok’. Cat genuinely thinks this podcast is three hours long because once we finish there’s a lovely little chair over there that I’m actually going to go and have a snooze in. The idea of, in a previous life, going on tour was ‘yeah, let’s go on tour, let’s have a beer, we’ll stay up.’

“Now it’s like: ‘Where can I get a nice cooked breakfast? Where can I get a lie in?’ You take calls from the wife and she tells you what the kids are up to and how busy she is and you fake interest in these things. And then have a little snooze. You go a tell a few jokes in the evening and you pretend it’s very hard work, oh it’s very hard work.”
