Fuelling Around podcast: Tim Peake on living in space and his love for ground level speed

Astronaut Tim Peake joins hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss what it is really like to live in space, his passion for motorcycles and answer questions on what being a spaceman is really like.

Peake is the first British ESA astronaut and the sixth person born in the UK to travel to the International Space Station, as well being only the seventh to venture into space.

The 51-year-old reveals stories from his new book called Space: The Human Story and details his fondness  for motorbikes and cars.

Tim Peake reveals what it’s really like to live with no gravity

During the episode, presenter Plato was very inquisitive about what it’s like to live on the International Space Station and had a lot of questions he wanted answered, including living without gravity.

“Most of the time you float around when you want to,” Peake explains.

“If you want to do any tasks with your hands, the problem is that you need to anchor your feet before you can work with your hands and you can’t be holding onto things all the time. So we’re constantly using our feet underneath handrails. We’re gripping with our feet like monkeys.

“What’s really strange is after six months in space, the soles of your feet are completely clean and fresh like babies feet, you just don’t put any weight or pressure on them. But the top of your feet are horrible and scaly and hard skin because you’re constantly sliding your feet under these handrails to stabilise your body position.”
