Fuelling Around podcast: Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason on owning a replica of the world’s first car

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason joins hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss his career, car collection and still writing music in his 80s.

Mason is best known for being part of iconic British band Pink Floyd, helping to write hit singles such as Another Brick in the Wall, Money and Wish You Were Here along with the infamous album The Dark Side of the Moon.

The 80-year-old sat down with Plato and Vitty to discuss the epic cars he has driven over the years and what is in his current collection.

Nick Mason on owning a replica of the first motor vehicle

During a wide-ranging chat, Mason detailed the stunning cars he has bought, including a replica of the world’s first ever motor vehicle.

“Funnily enough the latest car might be the most unlikely because it’s a replica,” Mason explained.

“The original car no longer exists, of a 1895 Benz, which is basically seen as the first motor car ever.

“Some years ago a guy called John Bentley actually made 12 of these. The idea was for them to go to a couple of museums, probably the Mercedes-Benz museum in particular, who wanted this replica, but while he was doing it he thought, I’ll make a bunch of these.

“They are the most amazing cars because they do work. Unfortunately though they are not entirely road legal.

“What it looks like is a Victorian pram. The original has now gone, but I think it was Mercedes themselves who commissioned the making of this replica.

“I haven’t driven it yet, I have to be honest, but I’m told it’s just as frightening as any super car.”
