Fuelling Around podcast: Paul Wallace of Supercars of London on why it’s harder to grow on YouTube than ever before

YouTuber Paul Wallace from the channel Supercars of London joins hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty on the award-winning podcast Fuelling Around to discuss his career and the impact of social media on society.

Wallace has been creating YouTube videos for 15 years and has amassed nearly 900,000 subscribers on his channel, gaining millions of views whiled featuring some of the world’s most glamorous cars.

The content creator sat down with Plato and Vitty to discuss what life is really like as one of the UK’s most famous motoring YouTubers and discusses the best cars he’s been fortunate enough to drive.

Supercars of London creator discusses the rise of YouTube and how he got his big break

During a wide-ranging chat, Wallace detailed how he feels fortunate enough to have launched his channel at the right time.

“I think the world of social media, and us as a general society, has come on so much that we’re so overexposed and almost desensitised to content and cars, that I was very much riding the wave, and got in at the right time,” Wallace explained.

“I do see myself as lucky in the sense that I was capturing really basic content (early on), so if I was trying to cut through all of the noise now, and tried to build an audience on YouTube it would be really tough.

“You see these guys that have car collections of 25-30 cars plus, that are worth in excess of £100 million.

“So how do you interest people to watch your content if you don’t have a Bugatti Chiron? You really have to find a niche. And I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m saying it’s far harder than it was back when I was doing it (breaking in) because you go back to the early days of my channel back in 2008 and it’s a 20-second clip of a Ferrari F430 driving down the road.

“If you go and upload that now, no one’s watching that.

“Even the first five or six years that I was creating content, I never put my face in front of the camera, I was terrified of what my friends at school would think. I never told them what I was doing and I was always scared that I had this hidden secret.

“Whilst they were out playing football or going down the park and drinking alcohol, I was getting ready to go into London the next day to chase after some Bentley or Rolls Royce.

“So I was very, very self conscious of what I was doing, and it was only after six years that I then started to bring my personality into the content and started to tell my story, and that’s really when everything to accelerate.

“It’s far more difficult and near on impossible to grow on YouTube, unless you start with a lot of money or you have a production crew, but you’re seeing a lot of these channels now almost go bust because they can’t compete with other people.”
