Harry Metcalfe is embracing his online success

During the podcast, Harry, who’s been in the magazine and motoring industry for decades, bantered with the hosts about what the catalyst was for starting his YouTube channel.

“My meanness really,” he joked.

“(It was) when I was running a magazine and this annoying thing called video came along and we did print magazines and websites and stuff, and I just thought, video, we ought to do video, we’ve got to do video.

“I thought, well, if – I get invited to do amazing things – if I just stick a camera on the windscreen and yammer on a bit, it’s cost nothing.

“I do it weekly; sometimes I think I’ll back off and then I get something (and) I think, ‘I can’t wait to tell someone about this thing, yeah I can’t wait.’ So I ended up doing it weekly.

“There was an MD (Managing Director) of JLR, I was at the motor show in the US, and he had to go on (stage) live right across America to display, there’s a Range Rover Sport he was about to launch the sort of concept for that and I said ‘how are the nerves?’, he said, ‘no nerves, just can’t wait to tell the world about this car’.

“He stormed on and I thought, it was just a lesson that – if you’re passionate and can’t wait to tell your viewers about these cars – there’s no nerves, no nothing, you’re just, you’re there for the moment.

“You try to explain to people how you present: ‘I didn’t know I could present, I don’t think I can but I can’t wait to tell you about this thing.’

“It’s (magazines) a bit of a clunky way of being global, sort of getting the story out there in time, and YouTube, I just now look (at it as if it’s) just magic.”
