Fuelling Around podcast: David Gandy on testing cars for Auto Express and modelling on This Morning

World-renowned fashion model David Gandy joins hosts Jason Plato and Dave Vitty in the latest episode of award-winning podcast Fuelling Around.

Gandy, who has modelled for fashion brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Zara, Marks & Spencer and H&M, has worked on shoots with the likes of Naomi Capmbell, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Scarlett Johansson.

In a jam-packed episode, he recalls how he got his start in the industry after his then-housemate entered him into a modelling competition for ITV daytime show This Morning, his epic car collection and his clothing range.

David Gandy on why working for Auto Express magazine is still the best job he’s ever had

The 43-year-old also tells Plato and Vitty all about his summer working for Auto Express magazine in his gap year before going to university, in which he was tasked with delivering test cars to tracks in some of the world’s most glamorous locations.

“When I had a year out, I thought what do I want to go and do?” Gandy questioned.

“I have such a passion for cars, so I wrote to Auto Express magazine asking for a gig. I worked there for a week and they said: ‘Listen David, it’s the summer and all the guys are going on holiday. Do you want to be paid £50 a day to deliver all the test cars to test tracks?’ It was like someone had given me the dream job at 18.

“I should’ve stuck to that if I’m totally honest. I was being paid £50 a day and driving Subaru Imprezas, the (Porsche) Cayman or Boxster had just come out at that point. They’d be like ‘that needs to get over to Mallorca tomorrow’.

“I used to just join the team with the test drivers and sit in the back of the car being thrown around, and they thought it was hilarious, I thought it was hilarious and that’s how I spent my time, and then stupidly went to university.”
